Maunaolu Seminary Fire Destroys Hawaiian School
A large fire gutted Maunaolu Seminary on Maui on October 1 1898 destroying the wooden buildings used as a home and school for Hawaiian girls. Miss Tilton raised the alarm, most pupils escaped with only clothes, and Miss Robinson was carried out ill as rescuers saved the school bus and safe. The property was valued near 20000 with insurance for 10000, and Maui residents prayed for a new, grander Maunaolu to rise from the ashes.
