Alameda Strands on Fort Point Rocks After Fog Envelops Bay

The Alameda steamship of the Orea nie Steamship Company ran aground near Fort Point during a dense fog as it attempted Honolulu. Captain Dowdell and Pilot Johnson argued over signals while passengers, mostly Japanese steerage, were evacuated to safety by tugs and the Golden Gate, with no fatalities reported. Fire and oil fuels sparked rescue efforts as Sea Rover and other vessels tried to free the ship, and officials coordinated to transfer passengers to safer ships at Fort Point and Seattle.

Fog whistle delay at Fort Point noted after wreck

An officer of the United States Engineers reports fog signals at Fort Point failed to blast on schedule during Alameda wreck, delaying response. The witness, Mr Managan, recalls the approach of Alameda and a sudden fox-like movement from the harbor, with the fort’s engines unable to start in time as the white hulls blew after the wreck.
