Report of Bishop Estate 1897 Trustees Finances

Annual report of the Bishop Estate Trustees for the year ending June 1897 notes receipts of 892,805.05 and expenditures of 891,070.61 leaving a balance of 1,720.42. The Kawaiahaʻo fence project cost 276,454, with more conservation work planned on leases expiring. O. M. Cooke resigns. Col. W. P. Allen appointed. Death of long-time manager R. W. Meyer noted. New ranch manager engaged. staff housed in the new Merchant street building funded by Chas. R. Bishop. Paaina haw land legatees and ejectment suits discussed. Equity reform and circuit court jurisdiction changes mentioned. Chapel on Kamehameha School grounds funded by Hon. Chas. ft Bishop to be administered by his bishop trust. A teacher cottage at the Manual Department and minor improvements at the Girls School noted.

Death of W H L Halstead District Magistrate at Wailuku

Chief Justice Judd received notice from Circuit Judge Kalan announcing the death of W H L Halstead District Magistrate of Wailuku. He died after a hemorrhage following an evening at a Salvation Army meeting and a day in court. Burial was at Kale polepo, his birthplace. He had been a legislator in 1876 and 1890 and served as District Magistrate for about a year. He leaves a wife and two daughters.

Twenty Six Children in Thirty Years at Corbin Kentucky

Corbin Kentucky reports Marion Vanderpool and his wife, both about 50, as parents of twenty six children. Married thirty one years, the couple’s youngest is six. The wife has never borne twins or multiples. Most children are living.

Fire Alarm Prompted by Yard Brush Burnt Near Nauanu

A fire alarm was turned in near the intersection of Nauanu and Kakai streets just before 1 PM. A yard 250 feet from Nauanu street contained a pile of brush and rubbish found by the garbage superintendent, who had ordered cleanup earlier. Locals say rubbish burning by unknown residents caused the alarm.

Rival electric car franchises loom before Legislature

It is possible there may be four rival electric car franchises before the coming Legislature. One may be for the single rail system now reported successful elsewhere. There is a probability that the Legislature will be pressured to require underground conductors for all electric cars, instead of the over trolley system. The conduit system is more expensive than the trolley, which is chiefly in vogue across America.
