Olaa Plantation sugar project expands across 21000 acres
Olaa Sugar Company Limited controls about 21 000 acres along the Volcano road near Hilo with 11 000 acres in fee simple and 6 000 by lease. The plan includes a 46 000 000 gallon pumping system and a box flume to deliver water for a 200 ton per day mill. Rail extension to 22 mile point, large scale clearing by steam, and cooperative labor contracts support rapid development. The mill, designed by Honolulu Iron Works and built by Milliken Brothers, aims for December completion with a capacity of 200 tons of raw sugar in 24 hours and initial crop around 22 500 tons. The project features extensive irrigation from Kaumana streams and a 9 mile box flume, plus thousands of acres to be cleared and planted with Lahaina, Rose, Yellow Bamboo, and Yellow Caledopia canes.
