A prominent Hilo merchant J S Canaria owns a three story oceanfront residence on the main road to Olaa, with extensive verandas and a two story stable. The Canaria holdings include 150 acres of sugar cane land near the Hilo to Kahama road, grown under rainfall suitable for cane, with mill processing at Wainaka. Coffee trees were once planted but failed due to price and labor costs.
