Hawaiian Historical Society Annual Meeting Highlights

The Hawaiian Historical Society met at YoM.C. A. hall with W. dt. Castle in the chair. Reports from treasurer and librarian detailed finances, new members, book acquisitions, and a call for a printed catalog. papers by Prof. Alexander and Mrs. Emma L. Nakuina were presented, noting a letter by Jean B. Rives and corrections to earlier claims.

Opéra House Delivers Standout Honolulu Run of Ensign

The opera house packed to standing room only on Saturday as the Amigh company staged The Ensign with William Haworth’s plot and new scenery. Mrs Trwin, Mrs Wilder, and British and U.S. officials attended. T. Daniel Frawley announced a Honolulu return in September with new plays. Box office receipts were the company’s largest ever. Standout performances by Maelyn Arbuckle as the old salt and Blanche Bates as the betrothed Ensign drew sustained applause and bouquets for the cast.

Mickey divorce case continues before Judge Perry in Hawaii

The Mickey divorce case proceeds before Judge Perry with publication and mail service planned for the libellee who must pay $380 every six months until further order. Kinney and Ballon represent the libellant, Robertson represents the libelee. Dorothy Lamb ends her suit against Judge Kalan of Maui after payment of claim, interest and costs. H Dee appeals Judge Carter’s verdict setting aside a jury verdict in his suit against J B Organ. The Supreme Court, via Justice Frear, rules in favor of James A Low as administrator of Thomas Newell estate against John Horner, clarifying cross jurisdiction for administration. Government band to play at Emma Square this evening

The Government band will perform at Emma Square this evening at the regular hour. Professor Berger has selected the program including Water Blue and Clawdin Mercadante pieces and a mix of arias and marches.

Private war erupts at Nagasaki port between British and French crews

Nagasaki reports a week of clashes between Centurion and Bayard bluejackets. A Frenchman struck a British sailor, then both men were tossed into the harbor. Days later 26 Frenchmen captured eight English soldiers in a saloon and hurled a beer bottle at a British head. An English sailor was severely stabbed in the neck and shoulder and is reported critical. Consuls and Admirals were informed. Leave was arranged on alternating days. Mexican bluejackets aided the English sailors in a late fight.

Boston runs aground near Chemulpo in Flying Fish Channel

A correspondent reports the U S cruiser Boston ran aground on a sand-spit in Flying Fish Channel about twelve miles from Chemulpo Harbor on Stainst afternoon. The vessel touched the spit opposite Richie Island south of the main channel and, after the next morning's high tide, got off undamaged.

Detective raid uncovers chefa game near Maunakea and Hotel

Detective Kaapa’s men raided a house at Maunakea and Hotel streets at noon and found a chefa game in full blast. They seized the bank containing 86.05, tickets, and eight players. A small opium box found on one suspect may bring an additional charge.
