Associated Press Special Cable reports Japanese forces defeated 2000 Cossacks at Ai Yang Pienmen near Tokio on May 30. The clash ends with Japanese control and no immediate casualties announced.
A May 27 1904 Honolulu Advertiser editorial questions why sailors must endure earlier advertised pay. It defends the 1500 bluejackets in port and condemns harsh treatment by sharpers while urging humane policy and respectful treatment under the U S flag.
The United States cruiser Albany arrived from Cavite this morning and docked at the Channel wharf at 9:90. After leaving Cavite in May she reached Guam on May 14, left May 18 for Mo honea, and experienced fine weather throughout the voyage. At Guam the Navy transport Supply arrived for duty as a station ship. The Albany sighted the Army transport Thomas two days after Guam, and Wake Island was also noted. Former captain Dyer traveled aboard to Guam and was appointed Governor of Wake Island after Commander Sewall’s death. The Albany’s itinerary includes Midway Island and Guam.
The Hilo Board of Trade wired Admiral Beckley about preparing the Moohean Park pavilion for a July Fourth dedication. Beckley approved a measured approach and outlined plans to stage the pavilion and surroundings before final design. The Albany cruiser, under Lt Commander W. R. Rush, will visit Cavite Shanghai and Honolulu on a routine schedule, carrying officers and men including Ensigns Schoenfeld and W. Smith. The ship will load 800 tons of coal in port and stay about a week before heading to Bremerton for major repairs. Judge Robinson’s jurors are ordered to attend court at 10 tomorrow morning.
A federal court reporter's plea for fees highlights a lack of clear rules governing payment for stenographic services. J C Avery, the shorthand writer, seeks $73.93 for transcript work in the Ivanhoe case, arguing the court must cover costs to avoid delays. The April 1904 Hawaiʻi Territory filing notes an unusual practice where fees should be deposited, a matter presented to Judge S.B. Dole.
Poem fragment recalls warriors and patriots facing death in combat. It speaks of farewell to sweethearts, meeting foes, and fallen heroes decorated with flowers as tokens of lasting love.
Honolulu marks Memorial Day with a subdued harbor and banking sectors noting the occasion. Naval vessels including New York Albany Marblehead Hennington and Concord display minimal colors while the public decorates waterfronts with flags. Government offices banks and many businesses close or limit hours as citizens honor fallen heroes.
The afternoon procession to Nawanu Cemetery will be large. The official program lists forms at 2 o clock at Emma and the march will proceed from Emma to Vineyard to Nawanu then to the cemetery. The parade order follows.
The Gladys captained by T. W. Ho bron won the Haleiwa to Honolulu race, with La Paloma finishing second. Windy conditions favored close sailing from Haleiwa to Diamond Head as the Gladys overtook the La Paloma near Mo Kapu and again near Diamond Head, securing the victory by a narrow margin at the home stake.
A Hawaiian named Kellinul leaped from a moving car on King Street at about 7 PM to retrieve his hat. He struck his head on the ground and was rendered unconscious. Dr Warferhouwe assisted and transported him to Queen's Hospital for examination revealing skull base and brain injuries. An inquest is planned for the morning before Lt. Cumming and officials aboard the Malian cruiser.
