The commander of our forces reports landing at Linotung on the 18th. In daily skirmishes detachments have been successful and driven the enemy from Pull to the telegraph line vicinity. After fighting on the 18th, they occupied heights 38 miles from Kinchow. Casualties total 146, including officers wounded.
CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS May 19 The American International Chess Tournament ended with F. J. Marshall as champion after eleven wins and four draws. Marshall, an erratic yet formidable master, is noted for fearless use of untried variations against top players. He has finished in various prior tours, including ninth at Monte Carlo in 1902 and 1903, and third in 1904, with Maroczy and Schlechter among his losses. Although American by birth, he has spent so much time in England that some view him as English, a point Lasker reportedly did not contest after Marshall secured an international title chance.
General Kuroki reports after the Yalu battle that 218 Japanese were killed and 783 wounded, with 1,263 Russian corpses buried and 612 prisoners.
