General Kuroki reports detachment occupation of Kuantenchang on May 7 and another infantry detachment pursuing on May 11. Enemy cavalry retreated from Shuehlichan as Kuroki's force captures two privates and a lieutenant under General Honwall in IRA.
A dispute at the Orpheum over admission for police officers led to a tangle of arrests and accusations. Manager J C Cohen alleges uniformed officers forced entry and assaulted him while defending rules for free admission. Authorities claim officers were inside on duty to maintain order. investigation identified two plain officers and one detective among those inside.
Honolulu Supreme Court delivers opinion upholding insurer claim for fire losses on two burned Chinatown buildings. The Board of Health condemned the structures to fight bubonic plague, with defense arguing government action caused the fire. Justices Frear writes the ruling. attorneys Magoon, Lightfoot for plaintiff. Robertson, Wilder for defendant.
Governor Carter Kayapout announced a choice for chairman of the committee of five to draft a County Act. Names such as W. Smith J. J. Cooper and Judge Stanley are viewed highly. Democratic and Home Rule representatives will be asked for recommendations. Secretary Atkinson said all party opinions would be invited.
B Wilder petitions for administration alleging Gard ner Knight Wilder of Honolulu died in San Francisco on April 13 leaving property in all seeks appointment of administrator. Hearing date to be set by judge. The Argentine Republic will send the gunboat cruiser Patria to St Louis for the World's Fair.
The U S cruiser Tacoma arrived from Bremerton for her first ocean voyage. Commissioned in January, she docked in Tacoma after a San Francisco run and a welcome of silver services and band music. Commander Nicholson led a capable crew with detailed notes on future Honolulu search plans and sea trials.
Wailuku Maul Maya1 reports Judge Kepotla’s circuit draws Grand and Trial jurors for the June term. Names listed include D. Hi Makekmu J. Dow Gow Welnht Hanson Wi Shaw J. W. Rickard Geo. W. Wilbur and others. Juror pay limited to about 580, with deficits from 1904 appropriation. New judge may schedule night sessions. court house repairs to begin next Monday with jail and station sketches to be sent by Public Works officials.
The Supreme Court unanimously denies rehearing in the Cooke versus Treasurer case. The opinion states the deed's conveyance consideration, not incidental contracts, governed the mortgage sale. Mortgages financed a land tract with $62 100 balance. default led to foreclosure by public sale.
The defense for Richardem challenged the indictment charging misappropriation of funds from Honolulu Water Works. The judge overruled the demurrer, with Deputy Atty. Gen. KC Potore arguing on behalf of the Territory. The case cites alleged safe handling and disbursement of Territory funds and questions the indictment’s specificity. Continued on Page 4.
