After a regular session the Honolulu Stock Exchange board, chaired by Colonel J. H. Fisher, voted to raise seats from twelve to fifteen and boost membership fees from one thousand to five hundred dollars. No new meeting site was proposed as no better quarters were offered.
The Newport reports the transport Morgan City will load at the San Francisco wharf on April 20, taking about two days. It was due to sail on the 23rd. Past trips lasted about nine days. The Ohio and Benator planned to leave San Francisco on the 26th, and, being faster, should arrive soon after. All transport steamers are expected before the next regular steamer from the ponat.
The burgentine Geo. O. Perkins reached port this morning after a 63 day voyage from Newcastle amid a heavy gale that damaged some rigging. The crew weathered the storm with minor injuries. The band is playing at Queen's Hospital this evening.
A planned Da Bell high wire performance outside the Orpheum theatre was stopped by Marshal Brown and local officials citing legal blocks. Additional attempts to stage the act were similarly halted. The Orpheum seeks clarification while street traffic and crowding around the fire station persisted.
Josh Hilbus, captain of the tug Elon, is sick in bed and will not return for several days. Louis Everett fills in during his absence. The tug’s bell has been changed from harsh notes to a new musical tone replacing the old sound.
The tennis tournament for this year is slated to begin this month with many players worried they cannot practice enough. They urge a Tennis Association meeting to postpone the tour until next month. Also listed are passengers for Maui and Hawaii ports in Kentucky today: Jury Yaphasi, J M Ost, Row f Akeans, G F Maydwell, DM McCorriston, W H Rawsell, Dr Maxwell, and G B Thram.
Jeate Amara formerly representing Waialua in the Legislature died this morning at Kapalama from pneumonia. He was 73 and leaves a large family. His daughter Josepha Amara is noted for her prominent presence in the eighties legislature. Interment was arranged for Wailoa.
Tonight at the Hawaiian Opera House Janet Waldorf as the Greek maid Partheula and McVay and McGregor in dramatic roles promise a lavish production with costuming and scenic effects. Saturday features Alexander Dames drama CamiNo and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a special Hawaiian Sugar Company meeting set for Tuesday to discuss stock paid up. Surveyors work on the old May building to be replaced by a large business block.
