Treaty Ratified by Senate for Panama Canal Lease

The Panama Canal Treaty passed 73 to 5. United States pays Colombia $10,000,000 in gold, then $250,000 annually after nine years, for a near perpetual 100 year initial lease of a ten kilometer wide strip for canal use with American control of polls and sanitary matters, plus rights to import materials and protect harbors. Dominican decree imposes ten cent tax per hundred pounds on all sugar.

Lahaina Mail Boat Missing After Squall with Two Men

Lahaina March 17 The Lahaina mail boat bound for Lanai with two Hawaiians aboard went missing after a squall. The vessel left Lahaina around dawn and was seen to alter course toward Lahaina as the storm approached. Witnesses report heavy drinking on board.

Big Siberia Well Received On Voyage To Navy Yard

The big steamer El Lypia arrived at the Navy Yard after a five and a half day trip from Bun Feane, bringing four passengers including several well known city residents returning from a long voyage. The ship, larger than its sister Korea, logged a twenty knot speed on its première run. The Oriental crew of 222 were sent to the Coast in Peking and arrived in port days before sailing, with initial disorganization giving way to drills as the vessel adjusted. The full crew totaled 278, with 64 Europeans, 229 Chinese and 2 Japanese. among the Chinese, 112 work in the engine room as coal pile workers and firemen. Continued on Page 4.
