A fragmentary note details champagne imports to the United States from January to June 1895. It references names and places such as Mena and Ga and a centin berate hw, but the OCR text is garbled and leaves the main figures and entities unclear.
The Hawaii Legislature convened with eleven senators present. The Auditor General, Hon. Laws, protested approval of a $15,000 session expense without prior audit approval and sought legislative guidance. Discussions covered payment legality, references to committees, and assertions that the Legislature is the arbiter of its expenses. Additional items included reports on land leases, postal matters, and immigration statistics.
The calendar lists debt, equity, and criminal appeals from Honolulu District Court and Second Circuit. Notable matters include writs of habeas corpus, construction of wills, opium smuggling, footbinding, and rape cases. Attorneys for plaintiff and defendant appellants cover Hartwell Thurston Stanley, Kinney Ballon, Neumann Humphreys, and Robertson among others. The docket features multiple assumpsit, exceptions, and chancery appeals across a range of parties and vessels.
W H Hilliard the noted artist plans an extensive tour of Japan starting the 28th instant. Since arriving in Honolulu he has painted about forty Italianate scenes and native homesteads, earning praise for fresh interpretations of Hawaiian life. His works remain on display at the Hawaiian Hotel.
