The Senate opened with seven members present, then a recess, later nine appeared. Minister Damon presented a cholera expense bill totaling 60,000 with items for advertising, property loss, clothing, fumigation, and payrolls. Bills 2 and 3 on fiscal periods and current accounts awaited the President’s signature. Notices were given to amend Chinese immigration law and damages for land title openings. A proposed tax law revision reorganizes sections, restructures dates, extends assessment periods, and tightens dog and personal tax rules. The session adjourned at 10:10.
The opening routine featured Speaker Noone presenting the Commissioners of Public Lands report. Rp Richards noted bills for the biennial period and temporary loans were sent to President Dole, the laundries bill was set for third reading, and the District Court records bill was printed. The session cost $15,000 in expenses and the bill passed.
An illustrated San Francisco Chronicle feature on the first Hawaiian plantation describes Hooper of Ladd Co founding cane cultivation at Koloa Kauai sixty years earlier. The diary notes labor, currency, and conflicts with chiefs, plus the rise and fall of Ladd & Co and Hooper’s later fortunes in California.
A complimentary Hawaiian Band concert will be held tonight at the Hawaiian Hotel for General Warfield Surgeon Munn Lieutenants Toissok Trent and Newcombe. The program follows.
