The Opium Cache in Hawaii and a Smuggling Plot
A narrator recalls a Honolulu hotel encounter with Anan Wakane, a Chinese youth, and a tale of opium smuggling in the islands. The excerpt outlines a controversial report accusing officials and merchants of links to drug trafficking, and hints at covert partnerships and financial risk in a risky venture amid political tensions in late 19th century Hawaii.
