Captain Brown Dead in Portland After Long Island Life

Captain John A Brown a former resident of the Hawaiian Islands and a prominent figure in Pacific stevedoring died in Portland on March 18 from heart disease. Born 1844 he rose from deckhand to master and led Brown and McCable. He chaired various fraternal groups and served on Oregon boards, leaving five sons and several daughters.

Dar laborer killed by falling wire accident

John Silva a Portuguese laborer employed by Contractor Kinhoine on the Niuann dan work was killed this morning by a wire accident at Ke neluck. He appears to have stepped over the wire while it was on the ground dust then moved the engine which pulled the wire and suddenly lifted him ten feet into the air. Comrades rushed to help but he died a few minutes later. An inquest will be held at 7:80 oclock this evening with a coroner and jury. He leaves a wife.
