The Oregon town of Heppner suffered a sudden cloudburst with accompanying flood causing widespread destruction. Hundreds are believed killed or missing, with about 150 injured and property losses around several million dollars. Nearby towns have begun aid efforts.
Department heads reported at the council meeting on appointing a successor to Superintendent Henry B. Cooper. No final action was taken beyond withholding the decision for the Governor to submit a name to the Legislature before the week ends. Names mentioned included Marston Campbell Eben Low and B KR.
Kahuku plantation faced two cane fires on June 6 and June 11 with authorities suspecting arson. Yamamoto, a local Japanese resident, was arrested then released after investigators found insufficient evidence. The strike by Japanese workers ended when Yamamoto was freed and production resumed. Belgrade June 15 Prince Peter Karageorgevitch was elected king after the murder of Alexander. The election passed without incident as Serbian forces stayed alert for disturbances. A general amnesty proclamation followed and was widely celebrated. In Geneva Prince Peter was formally notified of his accession and preparations for his journey to Belgrade were begun.
General Kuropatkin, Russian Minister of War, was given a warm welcome by Japanese authorities. A large fete in his honor was attended by Parliament members and executives as he traveled en route to Port Arthur and to inspect Russian forces in Siberia and Manchuria.
Berlin June 15 The German Government indicates readiness to accept the situation in Servia without protest according to an Associated Press special cable.
