San Francisco Mint Closes for Accounting

The San Francisco Mint closed yesterday for annual accounting and settlement with no clear reopening date. Labor-saving machines will replace thirty-seven women workers, who have served the Federal institution for nine years, as machines now perform tasks faster and more efficiently. The superintendent conferred in Washington amid union concerns over management. Most women are expected to lose their positions when the mint reopens, if any remain employed.
