Planters oppose Honolulu refinery in Hawaii annexation talks
J B Atherton was asked if annexation would spur a local refinery for Hawaiian sugar planters. He said there is no foundation for such sneat, noting the planters already have a refinery on the California coast and could contract more cheaply there. A refinery in Honolulu would be more expensive, so refining would rely on raw sugar reporting.
