Cigarette purchase ends in death of fireman Antone Jose

Antone Jose, a 19 year old Portuguese fireman for the Hanolulu Construction and Leaving Company, died after a moving locomotive crushed him while he stepped to buy a cigarette from a Japanese vendor. The incident occurred as he attempted to reboard between two freight cars, a chain obstruction causing him to be pinched between the cars. Witnesses, including Lam Kaw and Alt Kook, described Jose attempting to cross the cars and being struck by four or more carts. an observer Shamak Kaathie saw him leave the car each morning at the same stop for a cigarette. His family was notified, and a coroner's jury was summoned to view the remains at the government morgue.
