Sheriff Reports On Past Year's Law Transgressors
High Sheriff Brown presented to the Attorney General statistics on arrests ending June 20. Total arrests: 3,006 with 2,087 on Oahu, 1,071 on Maui and Molokai, 481 on Kauai. Convictions reached 6,200. 898% were females. Most arrests involved Orientals, notably 2,551 Japanese and 2,671 Chinese. gambling led. Financials show fines and costs totaling 40,887.75 across islands, with Oahu contributing 27,105.66 and Maui and Molokai 760.76. total fines and costs imposed 36,070.50. Drunk driving arrests numbered 1,066 on Oahu, Maui and Molokai 161, Kauai 18. 1,972 convictions for drunkenness. Hawaiians led with 61% of arrests, Americans second, Japanese third. Chinese arrests for drunkenness total 4. Gambling offenses numbered 3,221 with Newhall having 654. Chinese gamblers strong on Oahu, Japanese higher on other islands. Gambling finances: total fines 9,509. costs 2,251.65. total imposed 10,470.50. Spirituous liquor sales without license produced 163 arrests, 97 convicted, 56 discharged. Oahu 80 arrests, Hawaii 26, Maui and Molokai 28, Kauai 14. Of liquor sellers, 127 were male, 16 female. Orientals again prominent with 69 Japanese and 44 Chinese. The record notes sharp island differences in enforcement and penalties, with substantial jail avoidance to pay fines.
