Marshal Replies on Ota Case and Alameda Departure

Charles J. McCarthy reported a letter from Marshal Brown dismissing charges against three police officers in the Ota arrest case of June 5 1897. Brown says evidence favors the officers and suggests a formal prosecution only by Japanese counsel. A large crowd gathered at Pacific Mail wharf to see the Alameda depart, with the band playing as notable passengers including Conant General Bilin Milly and H A Baldwin and bride prepared to sail.
