Collision of La Bourgogne and Cromartyshire sinks ship
In dense fog sixty miles south of Sable Island the French liner La Bourgogne collided with the British Cromartyshire. La Bourgogne sank within half an hour. 165 of 714 aboard survived. Only woman saved was Mrs. A. D. Lacasse of Plainfield NJ. Officers perished heroically. Cromartyshire towed to Halifax with about 200 survivors aboard. Also noted, comedian John J. Burke died from earlier diving accident at Sea Cliff LI.
