Fourth of July on board Newport celebrates Merritt era

Aboard the Newport steamer from San Francisco to New York a July Fourth program honored General Merritt and staff with toasts and speeches. Major Whipple read the Declaration of Independence, toasts followed for the Army, Navy, and Merritt’s command, while General Merritt’s career and leadership were praised in a lengthy tribute recalling Civil War battles and Sheridan. The address also extolled the officers, the crew, and the women left behind, ending with wishes for the general’s family and the ships' future.

Special Health Board Meeting on Measles in Soldiers

A special Board of Health meeting at Dr Wood's Beretania Street home discussed measles among soldiers at the Red Cross hospital. Attendees included Minister Sewall, Dr Wool, Mrs Cooper, Gov. Smith, Drs Wood Day Emerson and others. The group agreed to seek a U S hospital in Honolulu for contagious cases, with Sewall to confer with General Merritt.

Welcome for General Merritt Arrives With Naval Tug and Band

The Valencia brings North Dakota troops to port amid a nighttime parade as General Merritt arrives aboard the Newport. Officers include Captain J W Lane and Lt Me Weever. The 800 men, from Co A through Co K across eight companies, are stationed from Bismark to Dickinson. A Fourth celebration featured the Declaration of Independence, speeches, and ample ammo, with a strong bugle corps and singers but no band or chaplain.
