Alaskan freighter fire near Honolulu tests salvage plans
Reports say the American-Hawaiian freighter Alaskan, carrying New York barges and merchant cargo, faced a long-drawn fire off the Atlantic coast. Firefighters and longshoremen pumped, cooled and drilled holes to reach holds, with a temporary hospital aboard and insurance bonds disclosed as efforts to salvage proceed amid a near normal temperature and a hoped June smothering.

New Ships for Pacific Mail Company to Cost Millions
The Pacific Mail Steamship Company plans five new steamers for trans Pacific service. Each vessel will be about 600 feet long with 38,000 tons displacement and capacity for 600 cabin passengers, 150 second class, and 700 steerage Asiatic travelers. The project includes 100 bathrooms and a total estimated expenditure of around 6 million dollars. Vice President R P Bowers returned from the East to discuss the plan with directors in New York.
