Fire on Philadelphia cruiser recalled in Peru bunkers blaze

A crew letter from the cruiser Philadelphia describes a coal bunker fire on arrival at Callao Peru. Fire alarms sounded as smoke filled the ship. Crew flooded the coal banks with water and cooled heated plates to prevent further damage after three hours of effort. The flames were extinguished and the ship stabilized.

Alexander Dunbar a well known Hawaii figure was convicted by Judge Low in San Francisco of obtaining money by falsely claiming to be an agent of the Press Club. He received a ten month sentence. Dunbar’s attorney announced plans to appeal.
