Houses Deposited in Railroad Tracks After Channel Flood

A cloudburst near Alea yesterday caused violent flooding that swept along the Kwa side of the Alen railroad station. The torrent carried and deposited two houses onto the rail line, then shifted them off the tracks as trains were halted. Additional coal cars derailed at Pearl City, with one overturned and others leaving the track. Traffic resumed on the main line by evening, while the Waitawa branch remained blocked by a landslide. About 150 tons of debris washed down, and crews worked today to clear the wreckage and reopen lines.
