Albany Jan 2 Governor Hughes in a message to the Legislature urges a recount of the New York City mayoral vote of January 1908. It defeated Hearst by a narrow doubtful plurality. The message also outlines reform bills and promises made during Hearst’s campaign.
In Lodz Russia on January 2 a deadly clash between Socialists and Nationalists left fourteen people dead or wounded. Police and workers attempted to restore order as the violence spread through the night and into the morning.

A. P. Taylor, not certain of the chief of detectives post, told a Bulletin reporter that no change is needed for the assistant sheriff role. He said Taylor declined earlier but has accepted now, with Captain Parker as head and lieutenants under new salaries. The piece notes political maneuvering from W. A. Haven youngsters averaging about 1 year old apiece are jailed on a charge of shooting craps behind the merry-Ro on Hotel street. Names include Antono Ogen Alfred Freitas Frank Gomez Manuel Gouveia Lewis Walter Follewn and A Lucas Jr. The first named faces a more serious charge of larceny in the second degree for allegedly stealing bramns valued at 200 from the Government dredger. He argues the split on the Board of Supervisors shows Democrats cannot fully control the body and hints at a push to put a nonrecorded, pliable figure in charge of city streets, with politics driving the choice more than merit.
Sheriff elect Iaukea says changes will begin after taking office with hanger to clerical force and captains posts. A chief clerkship may change from Harry Murray as he aims to keep about the same number of officers, then adjust where cuts are possible.

James McGrea was elected president of the Pennsylvania Railway system to succeed the late A. J. Cassatt. He has served as first vice president of the Pennsylvania lines since April and joined railway service in 1865 as a rodman and assistant engineer. He held multiple roles including assistant engineer director superintendent mayor and general manager for lines west of Pittsburgh from 1882 to 1890.
