CUMMINS NEARLY FOUNDERED IN CORAL-DRIVEN STRUGGLE AT SEA

The steamer J A Cumming nearly foundered after a piece of coral breached the plank causing a rush of water. Officers, crew, and a fire department pump crew battled to keep the vessel afloat while laborers at the Honmle wharf hesitated to help. With pumps active and Hurry back orders, the ship saved most of its cargo of sugar and rice, sustaining damage to fewer than one hundred bags.

Diver Alee Lyle Repairs Sinking Vessel After Coral Injury
