The British Realm reports Rear Admiral Dewey, writing from Manila, endorses Britain’s imperial policy. He calls England’s imperial stance the mightiest factor in the civilization of the world after years of wandering.
On Kauai the Mikshaln from Kauai lists 41 070 bags of sugar left. The figure breaks into coded totals for several districts and companies. A later report from James Makeo says 55 910 bags remained when the vessel departed Kapaa, with several steamers at Kapaa port and time to reduce the amount before dawn.
Captain Cutler of the Klikitat learned yesterday that his daughter, sixteen, died in Seattle after a cold developed into a fatal illness. She was in good health when her father left home and she gained sympathy from many friends in Honolulu.
A group of young men and Indian members establish the Eni Makaala or Wide Awakes club. They announce dances will be held periodically and schedule the first bouee for Friday night at the Myrtle Boat Club.
A Duluth correspondent reports Miss Clara Fuller visited Mrs Rafae Draper with Mrs Wm Allen planning a future visit. Draper mourns the loss of both parents, and Mira Draper injured her head after a chair fall. A Chinaman, Wong Man Sing, escapes quarantine in Honolulu. a $25 reward offers capture. Police circulate a photo and tracking continues.
Holi, previously a police captain, was restored to duty late yesterday afternoon as captain of the third watch. He is noted as an efficient officer and is remembered among the men shot at Lettlemoon’s place. Wail, Thames, and Hart will also return to police service.
Brando and Gumpher, the latter a former soldier, have joined the Mounted Patrol. Scanlon has handed in his resignation.
A seller touts pure old-fashioned teas in lead-lined chests. Buyers may inspect the stock in daylight before paying, claiming the teas have never been manipulated since drying.
Kavimakaole widow of Joseph Laxarus sues to enforce dower against Alexander Lazarus over land between Kinau and Lavalilo streets. Defendant counters that Lazarus owned the land with title corrected from Joseph Lazarus, and O. Peacock & Co. sues for $30,815.57 duties claimed illegal under Newlands era tariff. Court set for March term. Samoa church dispute and consular actions detailed, with protests and armed tensions described.
A local musician received a letter from H P Passmore of San Francisco proposing to bring his three daughters to Honolulu for a series of concerts. After consultation with other musicians, the group unanimously decided against inviting them as the venture would lose money. Passmore had arranged to visit Honolulu.
A Chinese boy at a quarantine station shows no symptoms yet but is closely watched. A rejected Chinese man in quarantine was sent to a Chinese hospital for treatment after developing Bright's disease. A bond was filed to return the man to quarantine if he recovers.
Four engineers were arrested after a night out following their monthly pay. Two faced investigation charges while two were charged with drankennom. Richard and Earper, held for investigation, fought over a life dispute and stabbed at each other with pocket knives, injuries to hands and cheek.
In Paris on January 25 the Venezuelan court of arbitration began with a formal opening. The next meeting is planned for April. Arbitrators include Russian Ambassador Prince Quroussef, British Ambassador Sir Edmund Monson, and U.S. Attorney General Henri Porter, meeting at the foreign office with Minister of Foreign Affairs Motel Carsege as guests. The British ambassador hosts a diplomatic dinner for the panel.
At month end Ewa and Waianae will merge under a police department stand patrol with one deputy overseeing each area. Kaobi currently holds Ewa and Geo. Soa Waianae. J. Faneaf, formerly a patrolman, will become deputy commander absent a successor, praised for his force work and aptitude and kept in mind for future duties.
The Orpheum presented Through the Lines to a fair audience last night in Kentucky with Lucille Carlyle, a Kentucky Belle daughter of Daige Carlyle, in a period Civil War setting. Critics noted a weak plot but many strong moments and audience applause. A repeat performance is scheduled for this evening.
