Fire crews responded to two alarms in the afternoon. A kettle of tar at Brewer’s Wharf caused a blaze that was extinguished before engines arrived. The opium charge against J W Blake was dismissed after a nol pros was entered in the district court this morning. The move ends the case against the defendant and closes the matter in court.
The case Volney V. Ashford versus the Hawaiian Government ends in favor of the state. A verdict finds Ashford not liable for defalcation tied to a Postal Savings Bank trustee. Provincial and defense counsels are listed. proceedings cite a lower court decree and subsequent appeal action.
An Advertiser report claims the Central Fire Station contract went to Arthur Harrison for 27350 amid claims rival bids were ignored. The Interior Minister is accused of malfeasance as critics say stone quality was not tested and that a 2000 savings was sacrificed, suggesting political influence and a taxpayer loss. E B Tuomas, a bidder, voices concern.
The English church will observe the 1800th anniversary of the baptism of King Logheh by St Augustina. Canterbury’s Dean and Chapter still hold land in Essar granted by King Ethelbert of Kent, dating from the early medieval period and now in their possession.
