Fire crews responded to two alarms in the afternoon. A kettle of tar at Brewer’s Wharf caused a blaze that was extinguished before engines arrived. A second alarm at Liliha and King streets sent firefighters to a room above a Chinese stable where bedding and clothing burned, largely dumped from the window and doused by stable hands. No arson was found, and W A Hardy of Hilo, an insurer, left on today’s steamer with his wife.
