Bride Abandoned On Wharf As Husband Vacates Baggage
A Honolulu bound Alameda departure ends with a bride left weeping on the wharf after her husband plans to depart. The couple, recently remarried, quarrel and the sheriff mediates but little can be done. The wife finds her trunks missing and the search for the baggage continues as authorities await the next coast steamer.

Mass for King Leopold Requiem at Cathedral
A solemn requiem mass was held at the Roman Catholic Cathedral at 10 o'clock in honor of Leo pod II late King of Belgium. The Right Reverend Libert bishop of the diocese officiated assisted by Fathers Mathias Stephen and Andrew. The cathedral and catafique were draped in black. The chief mourner was Robert F Lange consul for Belgium followed by A de anna Canavarro Consul General for Portugal. Representatives of European and Asian powers attended including British Japanese Chinese German consuls and vice consuls. Admiral Reox and Collector E R Stackable were present. The congregation had few outside attendees due to late notification. The choir was led by Father Valentin and the mass opened with Gregorian music.

Oakland astronomer records Halley’s comet sighting
Chabot observatory astronomer Charlen Burckbalter observed Halley’s comet for about thirty minutes from 7 16 pm through a small telescope. He notes the comet’s position south of a line from the Pleiades to the Hyades and says favorable skies will keep it visible from Oakland into spring. Burckbalter will open the observatory for nightly public observations as the moon wanes.
