Another New Guilding H Hackford Co Ltd applied to the Government for a thirty year lease of the lot occupied by Bruns cooperage in Fort Street. The plan is to erect a two story brick storehouse on the site. The Cabinet granted the application, objecting to the usual advertised sale by auction.
The Cabinet and Chamber of Commerce discussed an 11.8 N Co request for a dedicated wharf today. The cabinet could not grant the requested assignment.
The adjourned annual meeting of the stockholders is scheduled to be held next Saturday as noted on page eight with a reference to See New Today.
A Chamber of Commerce meeting at 10 this morning, led by President Atherton, discussed harbor congestion and the need for increased wharf accommodation. Attendees included Hackfeld, Giffard, Schaefer, McChesney, Lowrey, Waller, Wight, Cooke and others. A committee was appointed to press the Government for immediate harbor facility improvements.
A false tale spread through the streets alleging Major Davia, former head of the military hospital, was arrested over hospital ration matters. Surgeon Major Wout dismissed the claim as absurd, noting relations with Major Davia are cordial and asking for prompt correction in the papers.
A temperance meeting of the Y M U A Tem perance Committee is set for tomorrow at 7 30 PM in the sascitation hall with all YMUA members and friends invited. A previous Monday night meeting arranged details and a letter from the States discussed proposed strict naval saloon controls for newly acquired islands and sought MCA cooperation.
A distressing accident on Beretania Street left a Collie dead after being struck by Car No 20. The dog belonged to Mr. Stogill and followed Mrs. Stogill and W W Dimond's child into the street near Punchbowl cross. Dr Rowat arrived and euthanized the animal. police will investigate.
