Colored Veterans Arrive as War Transports Reach Front

The 49th colored regiment from Jefferson Barracks Missouri arrives aboard the transports Warren Columbia and Daly Vosteck at eight o'clock after a seven day voyage. The 49th, most veterans of the Spanish American War, includes 46 officers and 866 men, with a 26 piece regimental band and a predominantly white staff. Also aboard the Columbia and Daly Vosteck are elements of the 424th Infantry Regiment and the 42nd Infantry, with officers and medical staff listed among the passengers. The voyage follows earlier movements from San Francisco and Fort Niagara, with the ships slowed by repairs and an earlier incident on the Vosteck. Anxious to reach Manila, officers and troops prepare for ongoing deployment amid the broader war effort.
