The discussion also covered wounded sailors in naval battles and proposed on deck operating rooms and better sanitation aboard ships.

Wreck of the Helen N. Kimball near Fanning Island
The schooner Helen N. Kimball wrecked on Fanning Island June 26. Crew arrived in Ventura en route home. Vessel had delivered rail cars to Katulul and anchored off port, but a storm tore anchor and wreck followed. Thirteen days on land before rescue by British steamer Trebel sent to Pago Pago. One crew member with a broken leg remained on island until recovery.
