Salamanders Released in Makiki Stream for Mosquito Control

Government entomologist Prof Koebele released about a hundred salamanders into Makiki stream two miles above the reservoir. The aim is to breed them and later release into taro patches to destroy taro worm. Four salamanders were kept in a Government nursery tub to study their mosquito-eating habits. Salamanders feed underwater, potentially reducing mosquitoes before winged adults appear. The species is femyotylua toromus. all stock came from California.
