J T Waterhouse notes land and cultivation will remain after the election. He touts Ha waii homes for gardeners and promotes English made garden tools including hoes forks rakes and hedge shears. He claims superior quality and price as a mark of his shop.
Bid deadline is noon Saturday August 15 1896 for a two story building on the makai side of King street opposite Liliha street. Plans and specifications may be viewed at the bidder’s office. The bidder reserves the right to reject any or all bids.
Bids were opened at noon for the foundations of the new central fire station and for the Kailua beach road project in Kona Hawaii. Bids included M F Scott, Geo aepongelt, J McGuire, David Alans, with amounts ranging widely. the highest bids were more than double the lowest in the fire station contract and over six times the lowest in the Kailua road bid.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports a Chinatown elopement scandal involving Chinese actor Chong Doe and Wong Hay, wife of a Barkley Powder Works employee. Six Companies dispatched a special agent to Honolulu to pursue Wong Hay’s wife, who reportedly left with funds from Wong Hay’s household effects and jewelry. Wong Hay travels aboard the steamer China to seek arrest for grand larceny, with talk that punishment, even death, awaits upon return to China.
About 125 Japanese quit work on Thursday at the instigation of a few ringleaders. Promoters were targeted. Yamada Kunioka and Akiyamas were sent off Kauai for good with their contracts to be enforced if they return. Je Eichi received ten months reef sentence. Asaiyami posted 8500 bonds for ten months. Remaining workers returned to duty.

At 0:30 this morning the fire department responded to a blaze on Queen and South streets in a two story frame building occupied by a Portuguese family. John McLain creates a forge based gallery on Fort street with an oil painting showing a man rejoicing over toddy and an old woman enjoying a teacup. The work was secured at auction. Cunha, a noted art patron, may need to reassess his standing.

The finance report concluded transfer of bonds was discretionary. the board then adjourned after bond surrender was voted. Funeral services for Mrs J M Cooke were held with a large turnout, rites at home and Kawaiahao grave, and a flower-filled, well-attended ceremony conducted by Rev H O Galick and others.

Mrs J A McCandless was driving with her child and a Japanese servant when a rear wheel collapsed causing spoke damage. The horse halted quickly and occupants were assisted from the bogey before injuries occurred.
Honolulu resident voices defiant stance stating no rival to local talent and disdain for claims of imported champions amid hard times. The speaker dismisses rival press and asserts equal or superior status to any champions to have ever visited the town.
Report from Honolulu shows attorneys repeatedly questioned a witness this morning. Jurors heard attempts to elicit personal details including the gender of a girl and a key event around the time of the witness's birth as part of the ongoing proceedings.
