Accident to the Columbia at Newport details damage and tow

In a heavy five topsail breeze the Columbia broke up after an accident, leaving the Defender and others to test speed. The new boat was towed to Bristol yards in a wrecked state with a bent steel mast, destroyed canvas, tangled rigging, and a dented hull but the boat still largely intact above water. M Shortridge has acquired control of the San Jose Herald.

A disorder at a Honolulu police station yesterday afternoon stemmed from Indiana soldiers opposing police custody of a comrade. Deputy Marshal Chillingworth and Lt Sherwood brokered a truce after bayonets flashed and crowds gathered. the soldier was released with implied assurances no further incidents would occur.

Shooting at the HRA Range Medals on Show

Cargos of Gin Hidden in Stolen Cigars at Landing

Last evening a Boston cruiser engineer was stopped at the landing as four boxes of cigars were removed from a bag and later cleared by the Custom House for private use. Another Boston man was robbed of two tins, both unlabeled, containing gin. A guard signaled as the Moor man went to the Custom House seeking Inspector McCaules. tins were passed, revealing gin inside.

American Bank Repairs and Bank Opening Notice

Letters received by Devil Brown from the City of Pekin indicate the First American Bank of Hawaii will open for business in September. Reports from steel vault lining and bullion cases being prepared for shipment on ships arriving in Honolulu next week. The call for 100,000 from American subscribers has been issued and retained August 1. The Anglo California bank, the San Francisco preventive, reneges on payment due in Honolulu on the 17th, with no possible protest.
