Newport Here Again Fights In Gaba Gallantly Surges of Red Cross
The Newport, a U. S. Army transport, sighted off Koko Head then moored at the old fish market wharf. Aboard are Company E and F of the Ninth Infantry with 225 recruits for the Third Fourth and Seventeenth Infantry in the Philippines, plus eight Red Cross nurses en route to Manila. The voyage from San Francisco was mostly uneventful and the crew totals 79 mariners on a 200 ton vessel, with Captain Dupray in command and Captain French among the officers aboard. The Red Cross nurses, led by Emma Duensing and H. BE Fraser, express readiness to serve front-line needs. The scene at the dock featured cheering crowds and a band playing, as the Newport prepared to depart for Manila.
