The Senate opened with A N Kopoikin sworn in as Maui’s new senator after credentials were checked by the Judiciacy Committee. A message from President Dole noted bills signed and others returned without approval, while general business included passage of several acts and a plan for harbor improvements under investigation.

In morning sessions the House rejected a mass of charges aimed at spray of clothes with the mouth, urged that it was not a public health menace, and sent the matter to Health and Education. A resolution by Mr Robertson urged halting current harbor filling near the old fish market, citing cost and future dredging needs, with Minister Damon and Minister Cooper offering policy context. The day included aud it acts, tax appeals, and transit bills, plus local notices of deaths and an accident involving Mr Pflueger on the Pali road.
Bete Two Fearn Chock Pau, a Chinaman, was sentenced to two years on the reef by Judge Peterson for second degree larceny. He was found guilty of stealing fishing nets from a Japanese owner. The offense was minor but prior petty crimes led to the longer sentence. In Spain, about 8 million of 19 million were unemployed or unoccupied, with 100,000 listed as beggars and two thirds illiterate.
A large crowd from Pearl City and Honolulu attended a praise and memorial service for John Thomas Waterhouse at the Peuidoath church. Rev. C B Winning led with Rev. J M Kawra and Chief Justice Judd assisting. The program featured a choir, violin and organ solos, and a sermon from Hebrews 10:26 with remarks by Mr Evera and others, praising Waterhouse’s community work and character.
The average duty output of the Ewe mill last week was 135 tins of sugar with a 140 tone limit. At $80 per ton, earnings near $11,000. Over the past three works, cane growth shows perceptible progress, though activity remains limited.
Six drill companies will march in the regimental parade on May 6. Officers note volunteers will not be withdrawn from their duties and the parade schedule will not affect normal responsibilities in the future.
