Boiled Oil Bath For Rail Ties In Honolulu Plant
The Honolulu Rapid Transit & Land Co has built a new oil bath plant at Katauko for treating ties. About 3000 ties have been oiled and drained in three weeks. Ties enter a five by forty five foot tank, 2000 gallons of crude oil are added and boiled for two to three hours. Four holes are bored to allow oil to penetrate wood. The process, engineered by Robert Menaugh and A Welbourn, is run by electricity and aims for an 18 year service life.
