General Schofield issued an order to protect rights where civil authority may fail appointing militia commissioners in sub districts to command police sheriffs and constables and exercise magistrate powers in cases where justice is believed not to be done
Montreal May 30 A Birmingham Chamber of Commerce vice president Field travels through the United States and Canada to secure opinions from major boards of trade on abolishing privateering during war. Welch fusileers ordered to Point Levi as a new force is placed on the fortifications.
The Republican State Convention met in Montpelier on May 30 with Hon. Luke P. Poland presiding. Nominees announced include Governor John B. Page Lieutenant Governor Col. Stephen Page Treasurer John A. Page. Resolutions endorsing Reconstruction measures of the 39th and 40th Congress were adopted unanimously.
The May 30 inauguration in Louisville featured Hart's marble statue in Court, with a long procession of orders, a large audience, and F Bullock Fairverdl an eloquent address in front of the Court House. D Prentice is praised as his ablest effort. Business paused across the city.
