General Conference of the M E Church at Catcaco May 28 presided by Bishop Jones. Rev Dr Kidder offered a resolution on strengthening the Episcopal Board. the Scandinavian paper and language school were discussed. Dr Osborne opposed foreign language use. German delegate Rothe-viler defended foreign-born citizens. Debate on lay delegation followed with Hunter advocating restraint until requested. Peter Cartwright opposed lay involvement in church legislation.
The Democratic State Convention at Philharmonic Hall in St Louis convened to elect delegates to the National Democratic Convention and State Electors. After temporary organization and committees on Credentials and Permanent Organization, it adjourned to meet at the Rink at 3 this afternoon. Every county in the state was represented by full delegations.
The Presbyterian General Assembly South met at the usual hour in Battimors Maryland. The Committee on Bills and Overtures urged placing temporal affairs of the congregation under the Deacons when feasible. The report sparked an extended debate and was referred to a Special Committee for review at the next Assembly meeting.
McCoole and Coburn were indicted by the Grand Jury of Dearborn Counts at Lawrenceburg this morning and sentenced to four days imprisonment. They are now in jail.
