INDIANAPOLIS Assistant Bishop Talbott of the Diocese of Indiana departed for Europe to attend the Pan Anglican Council convened by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace London. He is expected to be away several months.
Washington August 26. Cabinet members have not resigned. several indicated willingness to retire if desired. Rousseau denies Sheridan interference and states he did not seek Sheridan's removal, noting any remarks concerned general matters in Louisiana. Minor notes on ministers Seward and travel and possible Dominican talks. The piece ends with a Hudson City deputy judge shot.
New York reports the libel suit of Rebel Officer Camines against the Herald is dismissed. Arnold, a Wadesman Bank teller, is arrested and both defaulters moved to the U S Court. John Savage becomes Chief Organizer of the Fenian Brotherhood and seeks a union of its wings. The President assigns General Hancock to General Sheridan’s post. A Spanish scheme to offer Cuba to the United States is noted. Also reported are German festival funds for Freigloth and the St David grounding near Matagh. The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Quebec dies.
A massive blaze last night engulfed the machine shop and engine house of the same and Indianapolis Railroad in Lafayette. The building 1200 feet long housed valuable machinery and four locomotives. Loss estimated at 500000 dollars, fully insured with Home Insurance Company of Cincinnati.
Boston August 26. The trial of Julius J Hartwell, late clerk in the Office of the Assistant Treasury, begins. He is accused of unlawfully loaning a large sum of U S money to Edward Carter and Miller Ward Co. Also reports from Burrago note lake commerce and grain receipts, while a murdered man’s name remains unknown.
