The Evansville paper notes Governor Morton’s plan to buy a hundred acre park near Indianapolis to honor Indiana troops with a monumental cemetery. It calls for land to be laid out with plots for each regiment and subscription books open across counties to fund the project.
War Department order revokes the muster and discharges John G. Hughes a fraudulent chaplain candidate for the 35th Indiana Volunteers. The Indianapolis report condemns Col John C Walker and Copperhead influence in the affair and praises the regiment’s later performance at Murfreesboro.
The Luminary carried a Memphis telegram detailing Grant’s moves from Raymond to Jackson and Edward’s Station on the 15th and 16th. Sherman and McPherson advanced from Jackson toward Edward’s Station while Hovey and Osterhaus pressed the center. The battle’s decisive moment came around 2 p.m. with the Union driving the enemy’s left.
The article notes anticipation of a large Utica gathering if Vicksburg falls to Grant and urges coordinated Union offensives to prevent Confederate reinforcement. It praises Western troops and stresses the strategic value of timely attacks to avoid defeat at Vicksburg.
On hand inventory lists 60 dozen Grass and Grain Scythes and 50 dozen M and L Waldron grass tools. Also offered are 50 dozen Blood briar scythes 30 dozen shovels 25 dozen cradles and 50 dozen snaths with axes nails chains and assorted hardware including saws combs and cutlery by Jacob Straub and Son.
The Murfreesboro correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette reports Vallandigham's dignified conduct during transfer to rebel lines and his assertion that war may require all Union force, but would threaten constitutional free principles. The piece cites Gen Jackson’s 1833 warning that nullifiers would use slavery as a pretext for disunion and a Southern Confederacy, with Andrew Jackson’s letter remarks.
