Desperate Fighting Near Atlanta Ends With Union Advance
The Army reports heavy combat along the Peach Tree creek line from July 19 to 22 as Union forces under Hooker, Newton, and Palmer push the rebels from the south bank and ridge positions. A strong, costly assault secures key ground near Atlanta with many casualties on both sides. By July 22 elements of the army entered Atlanta signaling substantial campaign progress.
