Naval Blockade Triumph Expands Union Navy Rapidly
The Union navy has formed four powerful squadrons to enforce a sweeping blockade along 3000 miles of Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Chesapeake to Rio Grande. By 1862 the force totaled 427 vessels with 1577 guns and 240000 tons, aided by 350 added ships and the rapid repair and construction program amid wartime shortages.
