A sensational claim from a New York firm advertises meteor inventions and grand discoveries that allegedly hold public esteem and transform gray hair. Manufactured by Cristadoro at No 4 Astor House, New York, applied by all hairdressers, with widespread distribution promised.
A Vanderburgh county committee publishes the Union League constitution and ritual to counter claims of secret oaths and partisan aims. They state the League was founded to counter the Knights of the Golden Circle and that politics are excluded, noting a 1863 pamphlet and revised initiation to emphasize patriotism and Union support.
A fragmentary exhortation argues the Union League serves government over party and urges loyal men to join and test its doctrines. It promises to expose any misguided or deceptive principles and invites members to come forward and judge for themselves.
Adopted and ordered to be published by the Convention of Union Leagues from the counties and other Union men of the First Congressional District assembled at Evansville on January 10, 1843, to promote unity and support candidates.
