Mrs. Pearl L. Cullen, tax collector of Lake County, reports 99.63 percent of the 1949 tax roll collected. Of $918,664 total, only a small portion remains unpaid as of June 1.
A Lake County Petroleum Industries Committee reorganization meeting will be at Leesburg City Hall Friday July 7 at 7 30 p m. Service station operators garage men dealers truckers and allied interests from across the county will attend to discuss matters affecting public and motorist safety.
Rev Arthur Rich delivered an inspiring address at the Eustis Chamber of Commerce dinner at the Legion Hall. He urged building a better community through brotherhood, understanding, industry, loyalty and divine foundation.
Monday the Eustis troop sails for Valley Forge Pennsylvania to join the National Scout Jamboree. Participants named are Tracy Baker, Robert Purdy, David Wright and Gordon Roepke.
Henry Schneider of Eustis is re-appointed distributor representative on the Florida Milk Commission for a term ending May 30 1954. He is president of Schneiders Creamery of Eustis and a leading figure in the state dairy industry.
Mr and Mrs W W Smith of Eustis suffered serious injuries in a two vehicle crash on Bay street. Otis J Phillips of Port St Joe drove a 1942 Pontiac sedan that struck the Smith Crosley sending it into spins and rollovers. A passenger H E Parks escaped with minor injuries. Witnesses were Mrs John Whiteman and Arlie Parrish. The couple planned a two months vacation in Chicago.
Win C. and F. W. Sleight of Mount Dora purchased seven acres on South Street between Grove and West Crooked Lake from E. M. Savage of Eustis. The grove to be named the Experimental Grove will host as many as fifty citrus varieties on several root stocks.
Eustis Fire Chief C. Z. Osborn announces a weekend service to recharge clean and inspect soda acid and m type extinguishers for 75 cents each. The package includes pickup and delivery and targets extinguishers not checked in over a year. Call Eustis for details.
W J Furey Jr was installed as president of the Eustis Lions at a Tuesday dinner at Legs Hall with Don Dillman of Ocala as installing officer. New officers include W T McDaniel first VP Barto Smith second VP Hank Simonson third VP L J Evans secretary Buck Robinson tail twister Fred Rich Lion tamer and new directors Charles Black Jr and Warner.
Florida grape growers will hold their annual show and convention at the Americans Building in Eustis on Wednesday July 12. They join with the Eustis Kiwanis Club for a noon luncheon. Open to all at 9 30 a.m. with the program starting at 10 a.m. There is no admission charge.
Hippy Hippler was elected to the Senate and Clair Johnson named Chief of Police at Boys State held in Tallahassee. The program simulates state government with a legislature session and bills on waste disposal and highway patrol funding. Faculty selected Hippy and Clair to represent Eustis, and participants say they learned government and parliamentary procedure.
Deadline is next Wednesday noon for Throw the Bull entries in Eustis. Sponsored by the Eustis JayCees, entries require 50 cents each and may tell any story. A statue of a man throwing a bull will go to the best entry with prizes for nine runners up. Prizes and statue awarded Saturday July 8 at 8 p.m. at the bandshell.
Stores offices and banking institutions in Eustis will be closed Tuesday July 4 a legal holiday. The Chamber of Commerce reports that many stores will remain open all day Wednesday.
Orlando attorney and former Major Horrell urged the occupation of Germany as essential to a free world. He argued economic and psychological aid plus democracy will teach self government and keep Europe in American influence, noting Germany’s role as Europe’s coal and goods gateway.
Mrs Robert Walker will lead a Charm School in Eustis sponsored by the Eustis Recreation Council. Orientation is July 6 from 2 to 4 p m at the high school with regular classes each Tue and Thu for six weeks. Open to girls 14 and older and women at no charge. enroll via Guy Merry, committee chair.
The Eustis Lions Club hosts a July 4 jamboree at the Eustis ball park starting 3 p.m. with gopher races 10 heats, a barbecue and a baseball game vs Umatilla. Admission is 1.50 for adults and 0.75 for children. proceeds benefit eye sight conservation and charity.
Eustis players join teams from Tavares and Leesburg at Ferran Park courts for a Saturday tournament. Coach Dr Hugo Curry, a renowned tennis star, guides local players this summer. Play starts at 3 p.m.
Guy Merry, owner and manager, announced plans to add an equipment department and storage room with modernization of display areas and reorganization of current equipment.
Police court session Tuesday forfeited four bonds on charges of fighting and drunken driving. A $178 fine was imposed for drunk driving and reckless driving, $103 and 60 days for fighting, and a reckless driving charge was dismissed for lack of proper identification.
Lake County newspapers and WLBE radio join forces to create The Lake County Press Association. The group aims for fellowship and efficiency to serve communities countywide, with officers elected and limited active members per outlet. The Eustis News hosts next meeting in August.
