First Donor List Signals Generous Support for District High Field

Orange Ave Receives New Asphalt Coat In Tampa Contractors Plan

City manager R. L. Maynard announced Cobb Construction of Tampa completed the base of asphalt and crushed stone for about eight tenths of a mile on Orange avenue from Bay street to the city limits. A seal coat will be added in about 10 days after the base sets. No word yet on retreading 30 other Eustis streets by Manley Construction of Leesburg, though a 10 day delay was cited. The $28,000 contract covers streets excluding Bay street and Orange avenue, state-maintained corridors.

Police Crash Boat Fund Is Completed

Eustis citizens donated enough money and gifts to finish the police crash boat project. Chief J. S. Dickerson notes a war surplus navy crash boat was gifted by Barney and a trailer by Treadwell Welding, furnishing the rescue craft and related equipment.

Frantic force fails to find fantom frog in office

Elmer the frog with a cheerful croak unsettles the Harry E. Morse Company in the Fountain Inn building. Office staff search desks and drawers but cannot locate the uninvited amphibian as he croaks at clients and workers. Post inaction leads to speculation the animal may be next door in a bank.

Mrs Treen Recovering After Major Operation

Mrs Frank Treen wife of the Eustis fire engineer was improving yesterday after a major operation at Waterman Memorial hospital Tuesday. She was taken ill late last week and admitted to the hospital Sunday with serious condition. Friends in Eustis wish her a speedy recovery.

Fire Chief Alvin Green recalls James Baldwin in Newton

Alvin Green, retired fire chief and railroad car inspector living in Eustis, says he knew Jimmy Baldwin's father James Baldwin when he was fire chief in Newton New Jersey. He notes James Baldwin later moved to Sussex New Jersey to live with another son while Green worked for the railroad in Newton.

Delegates Leave For National Elks and Lions Events

Sheriff and Mrs Willis V McCall of Eustis depart for New York to attend the National Convention of Elks as delegates from lodge 1578. Mr and Mrs Walter Hancock of Eustis travel by auto to New York as alternate delegates and will then go to Philadelphia for Lions and Pragon Club conventions.

Building Permits Issued for Local Commercial and Garage Projects

Henry McClendon received a permit Tuesday to construct a one story stone store building on Palmetto between Russell and Bates for about 300 dollars. George J. McKeehan was granted a permit for a garage apartment on Pendleton between Eustis and Grove for about 300 dollars.

Burnette Takes Over Eustis Laundry Plant Management

Jerry Burnette, ex Western Auto worker, will manage the Eustis Laundry and Dry Cleaners at 922 Macdonald Avenue with plans to add two new delivery trucks. A Navy veteran, he commanded the Sea Witch submarine in World War II and earned terminal leave last February before settling in Joyce apartments with his wife Jacqueline Clower. Burnette is a Lions Club member and has six years of service, including four in the last war.

L. J. Taylor Returns From Business Trip

Lawrence J. Taylor, Eustis druggist, has returned from a trip into Georgia in a futile search for a registered pharmacist and also travelled as far south as Tampa on the same mission.

Legion Youth Edifice Model Unveiled For Civic Center

A scale model of the proposed Legion Youth Center civic building was unveiled at a joint meeting of Ernest Westbrook post American Legion and Chamber of Commerce Youth Center committee at Grand View hotel. Architect W Kenneth Miller presented a detailed plan featuring a 35 by 65 foot main auditorium with side legions and wings for Youth Center and Scout facilities. Finishing touches will be added in Orlando over two weeks and the final model will tour store windows before detailed plans and a fundraising drive proceed.

Scouts at Camp Wewa Brief Attendance Change

Fred Hancock Joins Marines Brightens Local Football Hopes

Fred Hancock 18 son of Mr and Mrs R J Hancock 29 South Mary Street has joined the U S Marine Corps and is at the Paris Island base S C He is six feet one inch tall and 225 pounds and was president of his Eustis High School junior class He earned letters in football and basketball and his joining is expected to lift marine football prospects.

Community group urges dues and attendance at meeting

A call emphasizes paying dues alone isn’t enough to stay involved. It invites members to a meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday at the MERCE building to show interest, noting future meetings will be the third Thursday each month at 8 p.m. at the O. of C.
