New statewide measure ends city tax collection by cities and requires counties to collect. Counties will charge a quarter of one percent of premium on surety bonds. cities retain local millage and 100 percent of collected funds. State comptroller staff may be reduced. uncertainty remains on city personnel impact. A postal savings plan is mentioned.
Eustis schools offer a summer recreation program with all day sessions led by staff including Greg Murphy and Mrs Lynn Bain. Kiwanis delegates Gene Isted and Stanley Klar attend the Kiwanis International convention in Miami Beach June 29 to July 2, with alternates Charles Mingonet and Willis Haynes. Morning activities start at 6:30 and include instrumental, arts and crafts, and recreational music. gym events are run by Tom Comer and others at EHS track.
Eustis municipal pool offers a complete summer swimming program for all ages under Harry Dandridge with instructors Andy Caldwell and Bill Mills. Beginners and advanced beginners swim from 8:30 to 10:30 daily, with a general period 10:30 to 11:36, junior and senior life saving lessons start June 23, and adult classes run from June 25 evenings.
Town readers learn about school closing and summer activities including camps, cross country tours, and overseas trips. Eustis swimming classes progress from beginners to lifeguard level taught by instructors Dandridge Caldwell Richardson Bartlett and Goodman. Cassia attendees join four day 4-H Camp at Doe Lake Ocala National Forest with Connie Wilbanks Sonya Powers and Carla Gwann. Tom Douglas and grandmother travel by car to California.
At the commissioners meeting the city awarded Lake County Cablevision of Leesburg the CTV Eustis cable franchise and tasked City Attorney Neal Huebsch to draft an ordinance. The panel also decided to continue selling fire extinguishers via the Eustis Fire Department and discussed traffic light plans for Hwy 19 at Lakeview and South Bay Street with State Road Department studies noted. Commissioner Stebbins abstained due to ties with extinguisher sellers.
Sixty four Ho wey Academy students received diplomas on Commencement Day in the student center. Dr James T Cleland Duke University Dean of the Chapel addressed the graduates. He is professor emeritus at Duke Divinity School and a frequent invited lecturer at prominent pulpits in the United States and abroad.
Florida state representative James Glisson told the Eustis Rotary Club that a unicameral system is practical but unlikely. He argued current structure misrepresents voters, supports reform to bicameral or unicameral, noting passage in one house may fail in the other. He cited potential seat losses, budget cuts could fund road needs by trimming agency expenses. Glisson described his first year as a legislator, including a bill barring funds for campus disorder participants and his vote against a pay raise for tors, while upholding the governor's veto.
At the Monday city meeting Mayor R J Schneider questioned funding for marina piers costing 200 dollars and a tape recorder about 800 dollars. Bids for items will proceed despite limited funds for light poles rental from Florida Power Company. The street project sits in a 600000 dollar bond plan. Attorneys to draft an ordinance on obscene literature and pipelines contract of 2243 dollars to South Atlantic Construction was awarded.
The Commission promises improvements at the Gun Club trailer site funded by revenue from travel trailers over ten years. Commissioner W M Scott cites sewer connections as needed and Don Porter of the Eustis Chamber of Commerce sees broad benefits for local and Lake County merchants, while ongoing pollution and water issues prompt appeals for federal help and county/state cooperation. A petition from Orchid Lake property owners urges action on site needs.
Lake County Area Vocational Technical Center will hold its first graduation at the Mount Dora Community Building on Friday June 27 at 8 p.m. One hundred fifty one students will march and receive certificates from Kenneth Bragg after remarks by Floyd Christian the Florida Education Commissioner. Twenty five students trained for employment have already secured full time work. fifty will receive certificates privately.
The commission decided there will be no change in apartment sewer rates. Commissioner W. M. Scott said the city faces sewer department costs of 12000 and water department costs of 19000, arguing apartments already pay a high rate, especially with many units empty in summer.
Eustis City Commissioners schedule a public hearing on July 7 in the city hall council room. The meeting will discuss paving of streets in Phase II of the overall street paving program.
